Hi friend,
I’M TAMIKA
I always wanted to be a writer but didn’t see a path forward for a busy, working mom.
Life has challenged me in ways I couldn’t foresee. Trauma, tragedy, and grief sent me sprinting to therapy in my twenties, and that’s where I began my healing journey. After years of therapy and an arsenal of learning tools, I wanted to share what I learned to help others heal.
So, what is a lawyer-turned-contemporary fiction writer to do in this case? I used my journey and life-changing tools to create narratives that challenge societal norms and spark meaningful conversations. I focus on creating healthy family dynamics and bringing awareness to generational dysfunction. I use relatable characters and thought-provoking storytelling to dig deep into real-life issues that plague us all. I write dialogue-rich stories that encourage introspection and address dysfunction and generational curses.
LOOKING BACK…
I've always loved writing but didn't imagine I would someday be an author.
I began journaling in elementary school, and journaling helped me manage the trauma I experienced in childhood. I continued to journal throughout high school. In college, I majored in English, with dreams of becoming an English teacher.
Ultimately, I took a different career path and attended law school, but I continued to nurture my writing passion. After law school, journal entries morphed into short stories. One of those stories became my first novel.
Life is always going to test us.
In 2021 I lost my oldest daughter to suicide. I am forever changed. I started to pursue things that gave me purpose. Things that completed me. So, guess what?I came full circle to the dream I had as an undergraduate and began teaching. And not only in the classroom. I also help aspiring writers learn from life's tragedies and turn them into impactful prose.
We don't go through hard times just to go through hard times. Life’s challenges, and those little setbacks, have meaning and we must decide how to use them. Do we let them sit idly, or do we give wings to our lessons to help others learn and grow?
The answer is easy for me. I want to help others learn and grow. I write novels, create resources, and teach courses with the same goal--to help someone else.
MY STORIES
I’ve heard that reading my stories is like spending time with a best friend. I love that!
That’s why I write books with relatable characters who tackle hard things, such as alcoholism, mental illness, food issues, insecurity, and failed relationships… you know, the real-life stuff we’ve all dealt with, directly or indirectly.
My characters aren’t perfect—just like us. They make bad choices—just like us. And they manage to find their way back to positivity through self-love and family support—just like we should.
I’m a writer first, so plot twists are always present. However, my stories also offer messages of hope, redemption, and love. I want readers to feel complete when they finish my books. Yes, my stories are fiction, but they mirror real life. When you read my words, I hope you feel inspired, worthy, and experience laugh-out-loud moments.
